Dextrose

Mechanism of action: Dextrose solution provides a source of water and carbohydrate (340 kcal/L). The simple carbohydrate may minimize liver glycogen depletion and provide a protein-sparing action.

Therapeutic Class; glucose

Used:

  • Hypoglycemia

Contraindications: simultaneous administration with blood through same infusion set; avoid due to possibility for pseudoagglutination of red cells (IV)

Side effects: hyperglycemia, hyperosmolarity, hypervolemia, pulmonary edema, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral ischemia, injection site extravasation
